Thousands of Albanian citizens protested in Tirana. It was one of the largest protest so far against a proposed luxury resort development linked to Jared Kushner, the son in law of President Donald Trump. The demonstration started with the slogan ‘’Albania is not for sale’’, arguing that the project threatens protected natural areas and reflects deeper problems of corruption, lack of transparency, and political favoritism.
Jared Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump want to build a resort in the area of the protected Vjosa-Narta delta and the nearby uninhabited island of Sazan, which was once a secret communist military base. The project estimated to cost around 5 billion euros. The area of the desired project is environmentally sensitive and in this area are the homes to flamingos, sea turtles and other protected wildlife. Environmental groups fear the luxury resort cause irreversible ecological damage.
The protests have evolved beyond environmental concerns into a broader challenge to the government of Edi Rama. Many participants showed frustration with corruption, weak public services, and what they see as as political system that prioritises powerful investors over its citizens. The protests has also be known as the ‘’Flamingo Revolution’’, using the flamingo as a symbol of resistance to the project. Protesters are demanding the construction plans stop and that protected area remain untouched.
Meanwhile, Edi Rama has defended the project, arguing that this investment could boost tourism and economic development. The Albania citizens continue to protest for about 10 days. The determination of citizens can succeed where private agreements fail.
